A great opportunity for ARC’ers who may be interested in an iconic multi-day ride and contributing to a great event.
For the first time in over 25 years, the Great Vic starts in Orbost and will take you riding (and camping) alongside the Snowy River before heading through Gippsland’s breathtaking regions where you’ll soak in the sea air en-route to Wonthaggi.
In addition to the incredible scenery, each day provides a new riding goal before rolling into the heart of each town and setting-up camp. You’ll then get to enjoy an afternoon and evening of entertainment, activities, and the warm hospitality that only a regional town has to offer.
The Great Vic. depends heavily on Volunteers to make the event happen and there are numerous roles to look at – in particular the Riding Marshall requires volunteers to assist with ensuring safety of all participants and providing specific guidance at intersections and other points as directed. Typically the Riding Marshall will leave before the field and ride to their allocated point, guide the field through and then complete the route for the day.
Volunteers attend at no cost and are provided with tent accomm., meals and briefings etc. I have volunteered for the last few events and it is an enjoyable and well run event. I would recommend it for anyone considering how to combine their cycling passion with a community contribution. Also any ARC rider would have sufficient skill and knowledge to be an effective Riding Marshall.
Let me know if interested or have any questions and happy to meet for a chat if you would like more detail.

PS: Both myself and Wayne (Cadence101) have registered as Riding marshall Volunteers

2023-08-10 at 12:46 am #76539Russell IvesKeymasterHi there, have also registered for Road Marshall. Justin if you are looking for a tent buddy let me know.
Promises to be an interesting event… R2023-08-10 at 8:02 am #76540Garry DowdModeratorGreat news Rusty – since Covid all Volunteers have had a single rather than shared tent and expect that would continue. The question re sharing is only if you wanted to share with someone.
Look like we might have at least 5 ARC’s – Rusty, Garry, Justin, Wayne and Phil Simpson also keen
Should be fun
2023-08-14 at 12:31 pm #76580AnonymousInactiveGary, thank you for the information. I have registered as a Road Marshall as well.
I have a few questions on how to best do this event. May be when we meet on one of our rides, you can share the knowledge.
We are still in Perth at the moment. Should be back in Melbourne towards the end of September.

I too have applied and have been accepted as a road marshall. I have ridden about 12 GVBRs but this will be my first volunteer effort, looking forward to it. My brother, Tim (tallmantim), has applied too.

I spoke with Brad yesterday somewhat by way of de-brief and I’m ok for information at the moment.
I’ve also now marked to receive future posts to this thread.
