With winter well upon us the topic of thermals and base layers came up in coffee discussion.
My excellent, light weight, merino, long sleeve Rapha base layer of some 10 years finally fell apart – I ended up putting one too many fingers through the aging fabric. Not to mention the fight with the moths who also seem too love merino…
100% Merino is my favourite but damned expensive.
My requirement was lightweight, breathable (wicking) long sleeve base layer to go under my LS jersey on the cold days. I did not want a heavyweight base layer.
Ended up at Kathmandu as they have a good selection of merino, merino blend and synthetic.
Could not go past their KMDAction range with their Polartec Powerdry fabric (synthetic)
– 2 items for $60. Standard, single price, is $80. (Online for a single @ $30)
Btw the Kathmandu Merino and Merino Blends are $120 or more. The Rapha merino is around the same at $130.
I bought mine a couple of weeks back, have trialled them on some of the colder mornings, and they have fit my requirements; added some warmth without overdoing it while providing breathability.
Anyway… wanted to share in case others were looking at tweaking their winter cycling wardrobe.
Good luck!
