I’ve been waxing my chains for a couple of years now. Apart from the clean and silent drive train, I like the free speed that comes from reduced friction. I need all the help I can get!
I’ve been using the Silca Secret hot wax in a budget slow cooker from Kmart that has been dedicated to the job. I have two chains that I purchased pre-waxed from Zero Friction. I use them for 300km each and then wax them two at a time.
Pre-wax, I dip the chains into a plastic container filled with boiling water and wipe them clean with a paper towel. That removes most of the grime. Then they’re off into the dip. After waxing, I pat the excess, external, wax off with a paper towel and let the chains cool naturally to room temperature. It’s pretty easy.
I’m guilty of reusing the links more than recommended but I’ve not had any issues with them so far. The links are quite expensive for what they are. I de keep a spare set of links in the saddle bag just in case. The YBN links seem to last longer than the KMC ones. I cannot see myself going back to oil. Wax is the way to go.
