SAT 28th, 0630 from Ashy Station; 1:20-Summit-Montrose-Summit-Svaks-Ash.
At full distance and steep options this will be a hard ride. You can cut the ride shorter if you want to do a slightly easier version. Total of ~95km, 1750m incl Inverness option. Expecting a return to Ashy about 1100.
TIPS: it will be warm; Sunscreen/sunsleeves, plenty of water (hydration additive), food (banana, bar, gels …)
Ride out to The Basin together, form groups as we go based on fitness, refine route options based on groups – longer/shorter, steeper/flatter. Commencing from the 1:20 climb at your own pace. Recommended regroup points based on your specific group; 1:20, Summit, Montrose, top of Inverness, Summit, and of course Svaks. Intent is to ride back from Svaks to Ashy in a single bunch or multiple groups depending on timing. If you get dropped throughout the ride turn and head to Svaks via shorter/easier route options.
0630 departure from Ashy Station, planning to be back in Ashy ~1100
– Ashy-Burwood Hwy-Basin-1:20-Skyhigh Summit
– Option #0 Turn at 1:20/Turn at Skyhigh Summit & return to Svaks. Easiest option
– SkyHigh Summit-Montrose-Skyhigh (legal exit to the left/north)-Montrose
– Option #1 Montrose-Sassafras (bypass inverness/summit similar to 1:20)
– Option #2 Montrose-Skyhigh Summit (steep segments 10-13%)
– Option #3 Inverness-Skyhigh Summit (steep segments 15-17%) Hardest option
– Skyhigh Summit (legal exit to the left/north)-Monash-1:20-Basin/Svaks
Training Notes ==== Read at leisure Or completely ignore! ================================
I have been on the trainer, round Ashburton, Mont Albert, Beach Rd, and Bonds; Max distance ~75km, max vert ~1200m. I need to build hills strength and fitness – gradually, aiming to avoid injury!
To get ready for the Alpine weekend my plan is gradually add distance and vert metres, week by week up to the Alpine weekend in mid Feb. My ‘hills ride’ will be on Sunday (suits my schedule may not suit everyone). This will be complemented by the mid week morning rides (BRL, Mordi etc) and/or trainer depending on weather.
The ‘hills ride’ will primarily be around the Nongs. This will provide distance and vert and importantly lots of route options and checkout points to allow stronger riders to do more and those not so strong to ‘checkout’ and do less.
Some of the available routes and options:
– AshyStn-1:20-Summit-Svaks-Ashy (Monash, Olinda Cres option) – DONE 3/11
– AshyStn-1:20-Summit-Perrins/Crescent-Svaks-Ashy – DONE 23/11
– AshyStn-1:20-Summit-Montrose-Svaks-Ashy (Inverness, Summit option) – PLANNED 28/11
– AshyStn-Liverpool/Sheffield-Montrose-Svaks-Ashy (Inverness, Summit option)
– AshyStn-DevilsElbow-OneTree-Svaks-Ashy (Hughes st option)
One of the points to take away from the above is that I am avoiding ‘loop’ routes early in the cycle so there are plenty of ‘checkout’ or add-on options to make the ride easier or harder, while allowing the group to regather at the Basin/Svaks for the ride home.
From there will look at Emerald, Swales road, and potentially a DonnaBuang trip in January/Feb

I am in good idea to move to Sat this week2020-11-27 at 5:39 pm #62503
Myself and Will will join you – it is his first venture to the Nongs and we might do a scenic loop after 1 in 20, up Grantula to Emerald and back via The Patch.
Should be similar length, duration to full ride plan but more like 1,600VM
