Checkouts(shorter options): 1:20 only, no Summit, no Perrins/Crescent.
Ride as a group to the Basin. Climbing at own pace, form groups as we go based on fitness (if you are less fit do less) Regroups (based on those groups) at 1:20, Summit, Svaks. Coffee at Svaks.
Depart Svaks and ride home as a group (may be multiple groups riding back depending on timing but intent is to not have solos riding hime if it can be avoided).

Training Notes ==================================================================================
I have been on the trainer, round Ashburton, Mont Albert, Beach Rd, and Bonds; Max distance ~75km, max vert ~1200m. I need to build hills strength and fitness – gradually, aiming to avoid injury!
To get ready for the Alpine weekend my plan is gradually add distance and vert metres, week by week up to the Alpine weekend in mid Feb. My ‘hills ride’ will be on Sunday (suits my schedule may not suit everyone). This will be complemented by the mid week morning rides (BRL, Mordi etc) and/or trainer depending on weather.
The ‘hills ride’ will primarily be around the Nongs. This will provide distance and vert and importantly lots of route options and checkout points to allow stronger riders to do more and those not so strong to ‘checkout’ and do less.
Some of the available routes and options:
– AshyStn-1:20-Summit-Svaks-Ashy (Monash, Olinda Cres option)
– AshyStn-1:20-Summit-Montrose-Svaks-Ashy (Inverness, Summit option)
– AshyStn-Liverpool/Sheffield-Montrose-Svaks-Ashy (Inverness, Summit option)
– AshyStn-DevilsElbow-OneTree-Svaks-Ashy (Hughes st option)
One of the points to take away from the above are the ‘checkout’ or add-on options to make the ride easier or harder.
From there we can look at Emerald, Swales road, and potentially a DonnaBuang trip in January.

I’ll join but I’m going to do Basin-Olinda Rd for something new
Trav2020-11-21 at 6:14 pm #62322
I haven’t been up that route. Happy to give it a go.
Looks like lots of riders to the hills today. If we end the small group we can flex the route on the fly.

Route out is via Burwood Hwy. We can discuss finer points of route options along the way.
Plan will be to ride together to the Basin, then do the climbs at own pace. Head up either 1:20 or Basin-Olinda Rd depending on preference. Head to the Summit, Monash, Olinda (?) then Perrins/Crescent. Other extras if desired. Meet up at Svaks.
Robyn, see how you go. Consider checkout points and alternates if you lose the group(s).
See you all in the morning.

Me too2020-11-22 at 11:50 am #62338
Great ride this morning with Matt, Travis, Garry, Gavin, Ken, Richard and Stephen. Robyn a late scratching.
Basin-Olinda Rd was interesting – very gravelly. Can tick that off the list and put it in the bottom drawer. Beautiful scenery but gravel and rutting perhaps a bit much for the roadies.
The rest pretty much to plan; Summit, Olinda Cres (water tower option for some), Perrins, Crescent. And most importantly coffee and sausage roll at Svaks.
My stats for the ride: 79km @ 25km/h, 1350m, riding time of 3:10, departing ashy 0700 and returning 1045. Felt longer, higher, faster… ie generally harder.
Next week will add another 10-15 km and 200-250m.
Thx all!2020-11-22 at 12:45 pm #62339
